Polishing the game

Recently we finished many things for the game. In the past month, the level design and the looking of detailed arts have been fixed many times. But there are still more to be fixed in order to deliver a quality game. So, we are going to spend two to three months to polish the game. And we are looking forward to show you the beautiful ruin of the sky tower!

Process of level design

Another hot summer month. We are getting closer to the end of finishing our game. While working on the final stage and the art detail, levels done previously were also being reviewed and fixed.

In the beginning of designing a level, we often got many ideas of fun things. Some of the most interesting elements were picked to form up the concept of each level. And after we have the fun elements, it’s time to start working on it. The development phrase, which took us the most of the time. If we were lucky, we can have all the elements merge into one level at once and got one super fun level, however, no luck usually.

Many ideas were thrown away in this phrase.

There are some elements we thought they would be super crazy fun at first. But as soon as it came to implementation, there were no clue how it should be worked in the game. That’s not too bad since we hadn’t invest too much time into it. What normally happened was like “Wow, that’s a cool idea! Let’s do it!” and started it. As expectation raised while we were working on it, seeing it getting closer and closer to the finish, we have “It going to be something really amazing, I know it!” in our mind until it is done. But them, many times it turned out to be another thing thrown into the trash can……It just not that fun as our imagination.

So, repeat the process: pick an interesting idea, do, screw up, pick another interesting idea, screw up again…… And those elements remained fun built up the prototype of the level. What a tiring process, finally……Hey, wait! Not yet done! It’s time to ask for test playing.

Watching people play your game is the best way to drive up motivation. It also fulfills our satisfaction. More than that, it is important to see their reaction in the game: not knowing what to do, been wondering around in the same place or even getting annoyed by a thing. All these you have to keep in mind and make another more changes after the test playing.   TowerField

So, again, again, once again and another more fixes. Do, fix, do, fix and fix…… 5 levels, we’ve finished 5! Next, we are going to finish the final level and put art details to each level. Some grass, different mood of sky, and of course BGM and story. And speaking to the story, there’s a chance we should develop some text for it. The art itself doesn’t seem enough for telling a good story and we can barely do more arts.   

But, anyway, the game is really going well and we are looking forward to see how it turns out in the end!

We took some time to plan up things, took a little rest and finally we are able to finish 2 more stage designs. The wind stage and light stage.

There were some changes made to the wind concept. Originally, Princess was going to fly through the wind rings. But we found it was not so appealing…  it was just another way to move, nothing new. So the fly design was dropped, but we kept the wind concept and made some change to it.  And, actually, it was no the only thing being modified, there are more things dropped or changed during the design if we found it wasn’t fun enough.

Now, the wind will blow Princess away when she run through the wind area. The other one, the light stage, nothing changed regarding to the first concept. It was just too cool. XD

We are also working on finishing the music and art. We already see the stages are going to work really good after combining stage design, art, BGM and everything together.

Indiegogo campaign experience

Last week, Forward to the Sky indiegogo campaign ended. It was a good experience and we learn a lot from the campaign.

We were too rash to launch the funding campaign and didn’t talk our game well, results in giving wrong first impression and only a few of people knows it. We posted and spreaded the campaign message as much as we can, sent out the emails, tried to get covered by more gaming website. Some of the efforts do worked, but most didn’t. The game ifself, looked like the gameplay and the level art weren’t ready. Although we know it’s still in progress, we express the wrong message to made people thought that was how the game going to be like in the end.

We thought the biggest problem was, the game was too early to get fund and it’s lack of marketing/promotion. The solution for first one is obvious, we are going to continue to make the game better and better. But the second, marketing and promotion, are really something hard and somethings we need to push harder.

Next, let’s see the information we collect from the campaign.

Discarding the first 2 days, every impulse was happened due to being covered by major gaming website or social media, to be more specific, twitter.

1st place, Gamer.com.tw ( home.gamer.com.tw is the subdomain of it ), contributed up to $350. Gamer.com.tw is the biggest gaming website in Taiwan. It has very nice community and system collecting everything about anime/comic/game into their website. We were lucky enough to be covered.

Twitter, really shocked me. Twitter is not even near popular in Taiwan. We know its a nice media but didn’t expect it to be like this! After covered by Indiestatik, another lucky moment, the campaign got noticed on twitter and really help the campaign a lot.

No idea where the Other( email, direct, etc ) came from. Someone is helping us secretly, were you one of them? ( ̄﹁ ̄)@m

Again, Gamer.com.tw at first ( 3. + 5. home.gamer.com.tw is the subdomain of it ), for one single post. Reddit, definately another good community to talk about your game. And of course, don’t forget Twitter ( 4. t.co )!

Thank you for your support and running this campaign with us! We appreciate your participate and we got very good feedbacks during the campaign, although we didn’t made it, this is a very good experience,

Please don’t worry about the development, we’ll continue to work on the game. As wrote in the campaign page, all the fund we seek were going to be used for the art. We still have some budget remained and we’ll finish the rest of major arts with that, as much as we can.
